CSP sign up extended

Washington Ag Today October 12, 2010 USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service has announced that the ranking period cut-off date for producer applications in the Conservation Stewardship Program has been extended. The end of October was the original deadline but now Dwayne Howard of the national NRCS says;

Howard: “The chief decided to give those producers additional time to have to sign up for the program so he elected to extend it to January the 7th.”

CSP is designed to reward landowners who utilize and maintain a high a level of conservation on their land and who agree to do even more.

In the past fiscal year the NRCS in Washington state funded 118 CSP applications covering more than 26-thousand acres and providing 17.6 million dollars to help farmers, ranchers and private forest land owners implement additional conservation practices on their land.

Dave Brown, assistant state conservationist encourages all producers to apply for CSP, including owners of non-industrial forestland. He says private forest landowners may not be aware of the financial assistance opportunities afforded by the program.

A CSP self-screening checklist is available to help producers determine if CSP is suitable for their operation. That is available from local NRCS offices or the agencies website at www.nrcs.usda.gov
