Beef Counts rollover auctions coming next week

Washington Ag Today October 11, 2010 Cattlemen have the opportunity to participate in the Washington beef industry’s program to help feed the hungry at two rollover auctions coming up next week. These are part of the Washington Beef Commission’s and other cattle industry organization’s Beef Counts program to provide high quality nutritious beef to Second Harvest Inland Northwest for distribution.

The first rollover auction where donations can be made is Monday, October 18th at Stockland Livestock Auction in Davenport at one p.m. The following day, October 19th a roll over benefit auction will be held at the Toppenish Livestock Commission in Toppenish at six p.m.

Patti Brumbach, executive of the Washington Beef Commission, says you can also take animals to several feedlots.

Brumbach: “Beef Northwest, Easterday Ranches, El Oro Cattle Feeders, Para Livestock, Horse Heaven Cattle Feeders. All of those folks are willing to take donated cattle and turn the proceeds over to the Beef Counts campaign.”

AgriBeef will process the animals and also match any donation by 50 percent up to 50-thousand dollars.

The USDA recommends six ounces of protein per day but Second Harvest is only able to provide seven-tenths of an ounce per day, per person. Joining with the Beef Commission and AgriBeef in helping to provide beef protein are the Washington Cattlemen’s Association, The Washington Cattle Feeders Association, the Washington Cattlewomen’s Association and the Washington Livestock Marketing Association.
