Short-track speed skater Ohno to promote Washington spuds

Farm and Ranch September 18, 2009 The Washington State Potato Commission has announced a partnership with World Champion short-track speed skater and Seattle, Washington native Apolo Anton Ohno. The five-time Olympic medalist will work with the Commission in its continued efforts to educate the public and youth in particular on the importance of Washington potatoes.

Karen Bonaudi, Potato Commission Assistant Executive Director, says it was Ohno who came knocking on the door.

Bonaudi: “We are excited that he came after us actually. He wanted us as a partner, because we didn‘t think we could ever do anything like this. They have corporate sponsors but they also look around for local partnerships that they appreciate and he really liked what we do with kids especially and our nutrition messages. So that is why he wanted to partner with us.”

Bonaudi says being from Washington, Ohno knows all about potatoes.

Bonaudi: “And he liked them. He liked cooking with them and appreciated what they do for his training regime.”

So, expect to see a lot more of world class short-track speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno over the next several months talking about the nutritional value of potatoes and sharing his favorite Washington potato recipes.
