Checking the Tree Fruit Snapshot

Checking the Tree Fruit Snapshot. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. Tree fruit harvest is underway in the Pacific NW and every quarter Northwest Farm Credit Services takes a look at how the industry is doing. Michael Stolp with NW Farm Credit Services talks about how the fruit industry is faring. STOLP: Tree fruit is an interesting mixed bag this year. We'll begin with cherry producers. Last year cherry producers really had a tough year. This year the good news is most cherry producers made money. Interestingly though cherry producers made a little less money than most would have expected and a lot of that was due to some of the early season promotions that came on for the crop but again the good news for cherries is most made money where last year a lot of producers didn't. Stolp turn his attention to the current apple harvest. STOLP: We see an apple crop that's smaller than expected and with harvest ensuing estimates that it might be a little smaller than expected, maybe even dipping below a hundred million. And overall with the apple crop what we see is overall average quality but in some areas we saw some damage due to things like russeting and bitter pit and that was due to a tough early growing season.
