Apple Scholarships

Apple Scholarships. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. It's scholarship time. Jennifer Witherbee, Executive Director of the Washington Apple Education Foundation talks about the recently awarded industry scholarships. WITHERBEE: We are preparing to send 112 kids off to college this fall. This summer we had our scholarship luncheons and got a chance to introduce students to donors and students to more people in the industry to help tie that back together of where their generous scholarships were coming from, members of the tree fruit industry. The total dollar amount of scholarships awarded was approximately $370-thousand dollars. WITHERBEE: It's very exciting the amount of support that the industry is giving the students and when you think about what has been going on with tuition and what you know will likely be happening with student loans as they try to prepare for future careers it's just incredible that the industry is willing to give so much support to kids raised in the tree fruit industry. Many of the students that graduate may choose to come back as part of the tree fruit industry. WITHERBEE: They'll be coming back with many different degrees, marketing, accounting, business, legal. What we do with our students is try to make sure they understand if they want to live in tree fruit industry communities all of those degrees are important to a thriving industry. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
