Risk Protection for specialty barleys

Risk Protection for specialty barleys

Washington Ag Today February 24, 2010 Effective for this the 2010 crop year, the Risk Management Agency has announced it is offering insurance coverage based on contract prices for all practices of certain specialty types of barley. Jo Lynne Seufer with RMA’s regional office in Spokane says the agency worked with barley commodity groups in developing the coverage.

Seufer: “Specialty barleys includes malting, waxy hulless and hulless types. And what I want to share with your listeners is that it is available in all of our barley counties in Idaho, Oregon and Washington for the 2010 crop year, which is the one coming up right now, except for seven counties that have fall sales closing dates. And those include, Cassia, Nez Perce, Payette in Idaho and Wasco and Umatilla in Oregon and Klickitat and Yakima in Washington. They will have this available for the 2011 crop year, but because they are primarily fall types we didn‘t get this approval in time to make that coverage happen there.”

The Risk Management Agency encourages barley growers to contact their crop insurance agent well ahead of the March 15th sales closing date.

March 15th is also the sales closing date for other spring crops and for new enrollment applications for 2010 Adjusted Gross Revenue-Lite insurance in the region.
