Crop insurance a topic at fall NAWG meeting

Farm and Ranch October 26, 2009 The fall meeting of the National Association of Wheat Growers and U.S. Wheat Associates was held in Snowbird, Utah last week. Jeff Newtson, president of the Oregon Wheat Growers League is also chairman of NAWG’s Domestic and Trade Policy Committee and he says crop insurance was one of the main issues discussed.

Newtson: “Under crop insurance we are working on quality issues, working with RMA trying to get them to understand we have some serious quality issues out there with wheat growers. How do we go about getting those quality issues put in an insurance plan that can be offered to the growers. Right now RMA is working with those issues, falling numbers DON, test weight. Right now we are kind of on hold waiting for a white paper to be produced by RMA. We have been having quite a few talks with Dave Paul about that white paper. Right now they are passing it through their system and their legal department and will hopefully be releasing it to us in the next couple of weeks, which will allow us to provide feedback to RMA on those issues. Hopefully we can have something available to the growers here very shortly.”

Newtson says there was also discussion about how to improve crop insurance policies like Crop Revenue Coverage and maybe increasing the coverage level. He says it was basically just throwing ideas out there right now.
