Locavore Heaven

Locavore Heaven

The number of farmers markets operating in Idaho has more than doubled in three years, from 24 in 2006 to 48 today.  So there’s the answer…Farmers Markets, which  are a great source of quality local products and truly showcase the bounty of Idaho agriculture.

ISDA Director Celia Gould commemorated Idaho Farmers Market Week, held in conjunction with National Farmers Market Week, with a visit to the Twin Falls Farmers Market yesterday.  Special events and activities were coordinated by individual markets as well to celebrate the diversity and availability of fresh, local products found at farmers markets across the state.

Director Gould issued a “Locavore’s Challenge” to Idahoans to eat local as a way to support Idaho agriculture and farmers markets. A Locavore is someone who eats foods grown and produced locally, typically within a 100-mile radius.  But don’t think for a second that the only way to be a locavore is to go to a Farmer’s Market. ISDA spokesperson Lacey Menasco says you can go to an Albertsons or Winco or any local grocer.

“A lot of products right now in grocery stores are local and so they’ll have a big sign, especially in the produce section that might say local corn or local apricots, different things that are in season.”
