Farm Game & Improving Water Quality

Farm Game & Improving Water Quality. I'm Greg Martin with Washington Ag Today.

When you are attending your local county fair this year be sure and play the My American Farm game. Andy Barth with Washington State Farm Bureau says you can then download it for yourself.

BARTH: It's a really cool application. It's an interactive computer game that kids can work on either in the classroom or in this case at local fairs. It's on a computer or an iPad and they just play interactive games and they have a lot of fun not realizing that they're learning about where their food comes from and about the agricultural industry. They can download it. They can also play games online at MyAmericanFarm.com.

The Washington State Department of Ecology has a new plan to improve water quality and stream health for fish and other aquatic life in the North Fork Palouse River. The river has a high pH and an issue with a lack of dissolved oxygen putting fish and other aquatic organisms at risk. Some insects and fish have become sick or died when oxygen levels became too low. The public is invited to comment on this plan, which can be reviewed online or in person at public libraries in Palouse and Colfax. The plan outlines several actions that need to be implemented. The most significant, concentrated source of nitrogen to the North Fork Palouse River is discharge from the City of Palouse wastewater treatment plant.

And that's Washington Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
