Re-Imagine Agriculture

I’m Lacy Gray with Washington Ag Today.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Tilth Association, and Michele Catalano, Executive Director of Tilth Producers of Washington says the upcoming Tilth Producers conference November 7 through the 9, entitled T-40: Re-Imagine Agriculture, will honor the progress and growth of the organic movement in the Pacific Northwest.

CATALANO: Tilth Association was formed in 1974 and the various Tilth chapters came into being a few years later. So Tilth Producers of Washington, but there’s also Oregon Tilth, and smaller chapters in the state like Sno-Valley Tilth, and VIGA, and South Whidbey Tilth, and one of the better known ones here on the West side of the state is Seattle Tilth.

Catalano says the conference is being held in Vancouver, Washington so as to draw from our neighbors to the south.

CATALANO: To allow us to better partner and better reach growers in both states. We have a lot of speakers from Oregon this year and are doing outreach to bring more growers from that state to the event.

The three day conference will kick off on Friday with a new all day information fair.

CATALANO: We’re calling it “Meet the Experts Technical Assistance Fair”, and that’s open to anyone who’s looking for information from regulatory agencies that might help their farm business. So we’re partnering with the WSDA Organic Food Program and we’ll have vendors and speakers there from Risk Management, Weights and Measures, the farmers market group, organics, L&I - anything that would impact the regulatory side for a growing operation.

On Monday Catalano will be back to talk more about the numerous educational and networking events planned for Tilth’s 40th Anniversary Conference.

That’s Washington Ag Today.
