Wine Industry Scholarships

I'm Lacy Gray with Washington Ag Today.

The Washington Wine Industry Foundation is making more than $20 thousand in scholarships available this year to students studying viticulture, enology or related disciplines. Kacie Thrift with the Wine Industry Foundation says there are three different types of scholarships people can apply for.

THRIFT: One is the Clore Scholarship and another one is the Horse Heaven Hills Scholarship, and then we have a new one this year which is the WWIF Foundation scholarships - we're calling it the Foundation scholarships.

The Foundation Scholarship Fund was established in June 2013 and is an endowed fund by the WWIF Board of Directors.

THRIFT: Different families - Charles Lill, Michael Manz, Glenn Coogan and John Farmer - a bunch of different funds all went into this one fund to make this a big scholarship and it's kind of nice because college is getting more expensive. So, this year we're going to be able to do five different scholarships for $3 thousand, which is a pretty big amount, which is great for students.

The Walter Clore Scholarships range from $500 to $2,000 and are in honor of Dr. Clore's research and lifetime achievements in viticulture and enology.

THRIFT: The Horse Heaven Hills one is a little more restricted on who can apply for it. It's for students who are residents of Benton, Klickitat or Yakima counties. And that's two scholarships for $1,500.

Thrift says that the Foundation has awarded more than $110 thousand in scholarships since 2001. To apply visit the Washington Wine Industry Foundation website. Applications need to be postmarked by June 1st. Scholarship recipients for the 2014 - 2015 school year will be announced in July.
