Klamath Bird Observatory is a scientific non-profit organization that achieves bird conservation in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the migratory ranges of the birds of our region. Executive Director John Alexander says that farmers play an important role in healthy bird populations."We use birds as indicators of healthy ecosystems and indicators of healthy natural resources. Our mission is to conserve birds in their habitats and using the science that we collect about birds, listening to the stories birds tell us, following a traditional natural history-based approaches to observation-based science on behalf of birds and habitats and you have some very data rich models and decision tools. We try to use that information to help land managers identify and assess opportunities. We can compare potential land management alternatives and what the potential results of those might be and choose the best one for both bird conservation and also reaching whatever their desired condition might be. Let me step in with a naïve question. Would a wheat farmer with 5000 acres of wheat be considered a land manager? I would consider them a natural resource manager, certainly. And RCS and through the farm bill, there are all sorts of incentives to do conservation on private land and because it is the farm bill, many farmers do that.
