Pot and farm kids. With the legalization of marijuana a lot of questions come up and they all make me sick. I reached out to Christopher Yardon, a seasoned drug counselor from Rosecrance Treatment Center in Chicago and got his thoughts. “In Colorado currently, 74% of young people being treated for addiction reported that they received their marijuana from a medical marijuana card holder. So I would not say it is too early to tell because you already see the effects in that regard. There are tons of studies that show that marijuana has very harmful effects on the developing adolescent brain. As they begin to smoke marijuana, they oftentimes will begin to progress to other things as well. It used to be thought that drugs were an urban problem. Farm kids were safe. Is that true? I think that is going to vary from place to place in the country in terms of specific drug trends but we know that addiction is no respecter of persons. This is whether it is urban, rural or suburban. From an anecdotal point of view I live and work in Chicago and when you go out beyond the suburbs of Chicago into rural Illinois, I hear from teachers and parents and people from those communities and those rural communities that they are experiencing problems just the same. It used to be that kids would have to come into the cities to find what they were looking for. At this point, the drugs have made it to the kids themselves wherever they are.
