Throwing a spear has been a heated topic, am I'm not talking about javelin throwing in Rio. Recently there has been controversy over an American harvesting a bear in Canada with a spear. Josh Bowmar is an Ohio fitness trainer and former All-American javelin champion, posted this video. The YouTube video, caused outrage on social media and drew criticism from animal rights groups. In response, the Alberta Environment and Parks department reportedly called spear hunting "unnacceptable" and asked authorities to investigate.Canadian authorities are now investigating whether the 26-year-old broke any laws, reports CBS News correspondent Don Dahler. Many cultures from all continents have been hunting with a spear as a way of life for thousands of years. Native Americans harvested buffalo with a lance, Australian aborigines harvested kangaroo using a using a woomera, a wooden devise to help the spears speed and accuracy and African tribes have hunted all large game on the land mass with similar techniques. This brings up the question, What is an ethical hunting technique? Harvesting game at 800 plus yards with a high power magnum rifle, archery with a recurve or long bow, or hunting with a lance in hand?I think we all can agree that the answer to the question is proficiency and practice and taking ethical shots within your skill level.
