Readers who think they might know something about life and fishing on The Chesapeake Bay will discover they’ve barely skimmed the surface as they dive into a book written by Brett Gaba, entitled “Fly Fishing the Tidewaters of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay: A Calendar Year of Stories, Spots, and Recipes”. The book is a thoughtful, rural, and down-to-earth portrait of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay as seen by avid fly fisherman, Brett. We talked… “ Out here in the Northwest, we are used to fly fishing for trout and steelhead. What the world can you fly fish for in the Chesapeake Bay? Mainly striped bass, bluefish, sea trout, they are kind of in the main body of the Chesapeake and then as you move up into the rivers you will get into freshwater game fish like large mouth bass and crappie, pickerel and in the spring you have real nice runs of yellow and white perch… it’s a pretty diverse fishery.

From isolated tidal rivers to unexpected spots beneath highway overpasses, each of the 12 stories, organized by the month of the year, offers a unique view of this diverse fishery with the straightforward sensitivity of an old country song. Along with a thorough examination of the fishery, read about struggles with the economic difficulty of creating a home on Maryland’s Eastern Shore; consider an elegy for a faithful truck; and find an unexpected winter redemption in a pawnshop.
