Mea culpa

Mea culpa

I have been buffaloed, misled and I took the bait.

I recently ran a story with the following quote from an outraged sportsman who, by the way, is very well known in the outdoors world. “Here is another illustration of what those treacherous SOB’s in Washington are doing and hiding it from the public.  How many of you knew that this tax was being added to promote socialized medicine?” The story went on to tell about a 2.3% medical excise tax showing up on sales receipts from Cabela’s for purchases of outdoors equipment such as fishing rods and reels. I got my information from a number of very well-known and credible outdoorsman who appear on television. Okay, here is the mea culpa. It turns out that The Cabela's chain (and some other stores) mistakenly applied medical excise taxes to some non-medical purchases made on 1 January 2013. But it also turns out it was a one time mistake and not an ongoing conspiracy on the part of the Internal Revenue Service or the Obama administration. So we can’t blame Obamacare for trying to sneak into our pocketbooks undercover and get away with our hard earned money to line their pockets. I apologize to one and all who enjoy listening to Sportsman’s Spotlight and who rely upon me to get my facts straight. In the case of the Cabela’s story, I got swept up in the hysteria of a number of very solid outdoorsman who also got duped. Hope you will keep listening and I will do everything I can to check the facts carefully in the future when such urban hoaxes might appear.
