Cattle on Feed Report

Last week’s USDA Cattle on Feed Report showed both low placements into feed lots and low marketings out of feedlots, USDA Livestock Analyst Shayle Shagam says
Shagam: “Returns for feedlots have been very, very poor. Most of them have been significant losses and they’re just unwilling or unable to pay the kind of prices that were needed to bring feeder calves into the feedlots. Conversely cow-calf operators or backgrounders — those who are holding the cattle on grass prior to placement — had sufficient supplies of forage and were not in a large hurry, apparently, to sell those cattle to the feedlot operators at lower prices.”
Nationwide placements during October totaled 2.3 million head of cattle, 4 percent below a year ago. Marketings of fed cattle during October totaled 1.6 million head which was 3 percent below 2014.
The number of cattle placed on feed in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 210,000 head as of November first. Those same feedlots marketed an estimated 140,000 head of fed cattle during October.
The number of cattle placed on feed in Idaho feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or larger was estimated 49,000 which is 5 percent below a year ago. Those same feedlots marketed an estimated 47,000 head during October which is 4 percent higher than same time last year.
The number of cattle placed on feed in Washington feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or larger was estimated at 36,000 which was 19 percent lower than a year ago. Those same feedlots marketed an estimated 39,000 head during October which is 11 percent higher than same time last year.
