Stop Grumbling

Stop Grumbling

We all enjoy being with people who like what they do. Grumbling and whining are never what people want to have to listen to. How much time do you spend looking at and discussing your half-empty glass?
Jolene Brown, farmer, professional speaker, author, and family business consultant asks farmers and ranchers if they have listened to themselves lately.
Brown: “When you are in a room of farmers, it’s just fascinating what I hear. Here is what it often sounds like, ‘Crops are crabby, critters are sickly, machinery is junky, weather is lousy.’ Gosh that makes me excited to learn about agriculture or to become a part of an industry. What we have forgotten in agriculture is that there is a basic law. Here is the law, people like to doing business with people who like what they do. So listen to yourself. What kind of commercial are you for agriculture? As I have often said to my daughters as they grew up, I focused on this statement, ‘You know you don’t have to like what you do, you just get to do it. Now if you like it, it is better for everyone.’”
Brown encourages farmers and ranchers to actively look for the positive, rather than just grumbling.
Brown: “I’m often sitting in on conversations, one-to-one with different people of a family business. What I hear is this, ‘You know I can do 100 things right and I hear anything, but I do one thing wrong and he is jumping right down my back.’ Don’t you think it might be a more interesting and productive and different workplace if we chose to spend as much time thanking for the good as we do cussing about the bad.”
