Standoff Ends & Salmon Hearing

Standoff Ends & Salmon Hearing. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

It's all over. The last of the armed group that has been holed up in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge for 41 days finally walked out and surrendered to authorities yesterday. The conclusion of the standoff was livestreamed on YouTube and assisted by evangelist, Franklin Graham and Michele Fiore, a fiery Nevada state legislator. U.S. Rep. Greg Walden who represents the people of Harney County released this statement saying: "We can all be grateful that today has ended peacefully, and that this situation is finally over. Now, life in Harney County can begin to return to normal and the community can begin the long process of healing."

On Wednesday, Rep. Dan Newhouse questioned witnesses during a House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Power and Oceans hearing regarding the predation of salmon on the Columbia River.

NEWHOUSE: We met with several members with I guess you could say different perspectives on predation of salmon in the Columbia River as well as some of the rivers in California but just underscoring the tremendous amounts of money that are spent on salmon habitat, fish passage, all of the issues trying to recover salmon in our river systems. We know below Bonneville Dam that sea lions just have an open season as it relates to salmon.
