Oregon's Legal Pot & Open Data Program

Oregon’s Legal Pot & Open Data Program. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.

Add Oregon to the list of states that have legalized marijuana. As of the first of July it has been legal to light up. The move has been a boost to shops in Washington State since Oregon won’t see any pot shops open until late next year. The sticky wicket is that it’s still illegal to transport marijuana across state lines but police have been relaxed on that rule. A bill working its way through the Oregon Legislature proposes allowing the state’s first recreational marijuana sales to begin on Oct. 1 at medical dispensaries.

If you have an idea a new program by USDA my make it quicker to get to the public. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack explains how USDAs Open Data Initiative will make innovations and technology more readily available for development as commercial products and increase economic opportunities.

VILSACK: The Department of Agriculture has established it’s Open Data Initiative which is designed to open the vaults as we create new information, as we develop new research projects, we’re going to provide the data and the basic information surrounding all of our activities available to the public. We’re going to create a mechanism where it will be easily searched. It will then be connected to the global open data and agriculture and nutrition database which will embrace similar activities around the world. So the amount of data that’s going to be available going to be incredible.
