Idaho's Ag-Gag & Building Soils

Idaho's Ag-Gag & Building Soils

Idaho's Ag-Gag & Building Soils plus Long Trip. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

Both Idaho and Utah are dealing with snapback from their recent controversial 'ag-gag" statutes and their constitutionality more than likely won't be known until sometime next year when legislative sessions are held. The "ag-gags" prevent undercover investigations at animal facilities which a number of activist groups have challenged in court. Under the Idaho law, anyone convicted of videotaping animal cruelty or other violations could face prosecution. Most people agree it will take some time before the issue comes before a judge.

Washington State University Extension is holding a conference on building soils for better crops. David Granatstein with WSU says this is the fourth conference they've held.

GRANATSTEIN: This year we're going to focus a little more on some specifics of what working on soil quality or soil health can do for the growers including diseases suppression, a bit on the economics of building soils and taking a look at what's realistic in terms of trying to raise soil organic matter levels.

That meeting will be held on December 10th in Moses Lake, Washington.

Now one of the major Washington, D.C. attractions is the Christmas tree. This year that tree comes from a long way off. Gary Crawford has the story.
