Wheat Harvest Update

Wheat Harvest Update

Depending on where you live — wheat harvest is in varying stages across the region. I asked Washington Association Wheat Growers President Nicole Berg what she had been hearing from wheat producers. She said that Washington’s Benton County they began about two weeks ago and are nearly done. Franklin County should be finishing up here soon and that Asotin County should be mostly finished up this by the end of this week. In Adams and Lincoln county, she heard some growers have begun and Whitman County will begin mostly likely begin harvest early next week.
As far as the quality and quantity of the harvest, she shares
Berg: “I’m hearing across the board. I’m hearing some really bad, bad fields. In Benton County the crop adjusters were out pretty fast. But I have heard in Franklin County I heard of a farmer who had 24 in winter wheat and 12 in spring. That is below average for Franklin County. Then I’ve heard some areas that did some direct seeding in Asotin County and they were up in the 56 bushels. But I’ve heard that it is really spotty this year. It was like those clouds that came through, they dumped rain in certain spots. So in Benton County for instance there was one area that was above average. I think a lot of it was timing of when you planted your wheat, there was a cold snap in there and the drought situation.”
