U.S. Table Stocks Gain Popularity in Philippines

As reported earlier this year one of the newer markets for U.S. table stock potatoes is the Philippines. Since gaining market access last July, some of the marketing activities have included a trade seminar for Filipino importers, distributors, retailers and chefs; then a reverse trade mission as well as a sample shipment of Russet varieties, red and yellow potatoes sent to the Philippines.

Sarah Reece, USPB International Marketing Manager gives an update of how U.S. fresh potatoes have been received in the Philippines.

Reece: “As a result of these activities, commercial shipments of U.S. table stock potatoes begin in January of 2014. U.S. potatoes are now in 105 retail outlets in the Philippines and we’re currently working with five retailers to conduct promotions in their outlets during April and May so we should see an increase in sales in that market during that time period. Retailers are reporting back to us that U.S. potatoes are selling out in their stores very quickly and they’ve received a lot of interest about our U.S. varieties. The United States Potato Board believes that with our continued consumer education and marketing support that we can provide to the trade in country, we expect to see exports to the Philippines continue to grow over the next few years.”
