Rick Trumbull admits to going to the school of hard knocks and that is probably why he has such a passion for doing things the right way. Trumbull is owner of Sustainable Soil Solutions and is a leader in Washington’s Walla Walla Valley in aiding and promoting sustainable farming, gardening, and cultivation of land at any level.

TRUMBULL: When you start researching the whole system is what it takes to have a holistic approach or a complete system, sustainable system. It’s pretty fundamental actually. You’ve got the biology and you’ve got the chemistry. You’ve got the physical part of it, but like how do you achieve that?

Asking these kinds of questions about the soil and how it best grows things led him to some natural solutions.

TRUMBULL: It kind of led me into compost tea or or vermi-compost tea and then led us into doing compost and if you don’t apply it right or irrigate right so you just kind of just look at fundamental things. You look at all your inputs and make sure they’re what you think they are, but there’s no magic.

Trumbull says they wholesale natural alternatives to chemical fertilizers and believe that farming should be kept simple and that it can be done without compromising quality or yield. He says they really want to educate people about this.

TRUMBULL: We try to do it more with biology and you out compete it. So you try not to put down pre emerge herbicides and stuff in lawns you just support in the biology so you out compete the pathogens.
