Op-Ed

An Op-Ed criticizing cattle grazing appeared in local newspapers so I called Idaho cattle Association director Wyatt Prescott. “Hey Sparks. What liberal moron would opine that cattle are responsible for wildfires. (Laughter) Oh I think you know. They wrote an Op-Ed into several local newspapers, they being Western Watersheds Project, Travis Bruner who’s the executive director, and the title was Grazing Leads to Blazing which was a takeoff of our slogan, Graze It, Don't Blaze It. We felt it important to set the record straight and address some of the issues that they raise in those Op-Eds. Given the extremist, spiteful nature of that organization and their sole purpose to rid the West of all cattle, it really came as no surprise. But it is ironic because it is exactly the opposite. Grazing actually leads to managing the rangeland better and actually getting in front of those catastrophic wildfires. The federal government typically has well intended management practices in mind but under the federal framework and the laws and through manipulation, those groups are able to litigate the feds into taking more of a passive, non-hands on management type of role and that is ultimately what leads to a lot of these catastrophic wildfires. Management that is forced by litigation from these radical, extreme environmental groups.
