2014 Apple Harvest Update

2014 Apple Harvest Update. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

The apple industry machine is running on high right now. Todd Fryhover, President of the Washington Apple Commission says that not only are they picking apples but busy marketing as well.

FRYHOVER: All of our reps from around the world are coming to visit in early October so we've got two or three days in Yakima, a strategic planning day here in Wenatchee on Saturday and the next week we're in Wenatchee doing the same thing we did in Yakima. We've got Governor Inslee who's going to Skype in and give a 10-15 minute presentation. We've got confirmation from several congress people who are going to come over. Bud Hover is going to be here for that meeting so there's lot of stuff in the planning stages.

And on top of that...we're picking apples.

FRYHOVER: Yes, can you believe it? Gala harvest is the first one and two picks and in most places they're done. Honeycrisp, the same thing. Golden Delicious harvest is going on in earnest. All these new varieties that are out there, these club varieties so to speak are being harvested at this time as well.

The weather has been cooling off with some temperatures dipping into the upper 30's in some areas.

FRYHOVER: I think that the general consensus is that the yields per acre are excellent. The fruit quality looks good thus far ands we could indeed have that record crop that we've been talking about.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
