Season For Giving and Scamming

Tis the season for giving, and sadly the crooks out there know this. As the minutes and hours tick down to Christmas this week they are frantically stepping up their game to scam or fraud unsuspecting victims. This isn’t to say everyone asking for a donation is a con artist, and I’m not saying don’t be generous; just be careful in your giving. Do not give out personal account information or social security numbers over the phone or the internet, and never give a caller or doorbell ringer money, whether it’s cash, checks, wiring money or debit card numbers. One senior victim of fraud stated, “You trust people, and I guess that’s what you shouldn’t do.” Even though her reaction is understandable, I would have to disagree. You can still trust the majority of the people; you just have to be very sure of whom you put your trust in. You can still give generously, just give wisely.
