14-Week Columbia Snake River System Lock Closure

14-Week Columbia Snake River System Lock Closure

In two weeks, the planned outage of the Columbia Snake River System Lock closure will be begin. Pacific Northwest Waterways Association Executive Director Kristin Meira says there has been a lot of planning and active communication by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to stakeholders
Meira: “So river stockholders have had over 18 months advanced notice to plan around this. To determine if they wanted to ship their goods early, or hold their goods during the closure or plan for alternate transportation.”
She says that stakeholders are pleased with the river infrastructure investment that will be taking place over the 14-week closure.
Meira: “So this is an opportunity for U.S Army Corp of Engineers to go in and replace certain components that have reached the end of their design life. It is an opportunity to repair others. In doing this in a planned fashion it really minimizes the impacts to Northwest growers, shippers and other folks even further afield.”
River transportation is on schedule to resume in mid-March of 2017.
