On Wednesday two Eastern Oregon ranchers were sentenced to five years in federal prison under the 1996 Anti-terrorism Act. Their crime? They proactively set a back burn fire on their private property which accidentally burned 140 acres of BLM land at a cost of $100. Never mind that they have already paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines to BLM, never mind that they admitted culpability, or that they had already served a smaller portion of a prison sentence several years ago. Does the sentence seem a little harsh?
Oregon Farm Bureau has begun a petition at — savethehammonds.com and is asking people to go online and sign to show support for these ranchers. Executive Vice President Dave Dillon shares
Dillon: “For us we are going to forge ahead and our next step is to raise awareness and say hey, this is injustice. Now it will be up to the administration to help to correct it with a clemency grant. We have one eye on this family we think were terribley wronged. And the other eye is on the rest of the ag community and what this says to them — we want make sure that this never happens again.”
The Oregon Farm Bureau began this petition on behalf of the Hammonds last week via social media and email. Dillon shares the results as of yesterday afternoon.
Dillon: “The petition has 3,245 signers in just a little over a week. And that number or signers represent 45 different states.”
This is completely unjust — please go to savethehammonds.com and sign the petition.
