USPB Update on Potato-Friendly Salad Bar Initiative

Since United States Potato Board CEO Blair Richardson issued the Potato-Friendly Salad Bar Industry Challenge at Potato Expo in January, lots of exciting things have happened moving the industry closer to bringing the message that potatoes are nutritional powerhouses to young consumers through their school lunch line. In March, the USPB unanimously approved the budget for matching the industry’s salad bar purchases at their Annual Meeting. USPB Vice President Industry Communications and Policy David Fraser gives an update on the initiative as of July first
Fraser: “After just three weeks into the program, we now have 37 salad bars from the industry which means 37 matched by the USPB so a total of 74 salad bars three weeks in that are already in the process of being purchased and will be delivered to schools — we hope — in time for the start of the school year. The goal is 300 salad bars from the industry and 300 salad bars matched by USPB per year. So a total of 600. What we are really working on right now — we had a lot of interests from growers, from a lot of growers’ marketing groups, also some allied industry, agribusinesses that expressed interest. So we are in the process now of going back to them and saying, ‘You’ve expressed an interest. Now we are ready for you to make a commitment and order a bar.’”
