Snake River Lock Closures Announced for End of 2016

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced a 14-week extended lock closure on the Snake River System. The planned outage will take place from mid-December 2016 through March of 2017. With grain and other cargo volumes in the Northwest expected to increase considerably over the next decade, these repairs will allow the Pacific Northwest region to handle growth for many years to come. Pacific Northwest Waterways Association Executive Director Kristin Meria says
Meria: “I think this is really good news for the Columbia-Snake River System this helps to guarantee that we will have continued reliability for our wheat growers and other shippers who are using the river to access competitive world markets. This is really an investment in U.S. exporters and U.S. trade and our ability to compete overseas.”
So what do the region’s wheat growers and others who rely on the river system to ship their goods need to be aware of now?
Meria: “It is very important to stay aware of the Corps of Engineers announcements and visit their website and sign up for the updates that they will be sending out. They will also be doing conference calls and media outreach. They will doing all kinds of efforts to make sure that everybody knows this coordinated planned investment in our system is coming in the winter of 2016 into 2017.”
