American Farm Bureau Federation Distinguished Service Award

At last week’s American Farm Bureau Federation’s Annual Convention in San Diego, Colorado State University Animal Scientist and best selling author Dr. Temple Grandin was given the AFBF’s highest honor of the Distinguished Service award which is given to those who spend their life and career supporting agriculture.
Dr. Grandin had a news conference following her acceptance speech. She shared many insightful things and I’d encourage you to go and listen to its in its entirety on AFBF’s YouTube channel. Grandin shares the lack of the public’s understanding of practical live systems.
Grandin: “The thing that really concerns me today is that we have a whole generation of people who are separated from the world of practical things. They don’t cook, sew, build things, they don’t take phones apart to see how they work. I think one of the most important things that ag needs to do is for farmer’s on an individual basis to communicating with people. We are going to have complete transparency. And there is some practices that may have to be changed. But worries me today on many policy things is you are getting more and more people who make policy about stuff and they’ve never actually had a real job. They get a degree in Political Science or something else and then they go work in the Beltway and they have never been outside of the Beltway. So they don’t know what is going on in doing practical things. Another thing about practical things is that they don’t work perfectly.”
She added that taking vocational skill classes out of school curriculum is a big concern as students aren’t being exposed to practical careers - like agriculture.
