PNW Crop Progress and Condition Update

I spoke with National Agricultural Statistics Service Northwest Regional Director Chris Mertz and asked for an update of how our region is fairing this time of year. He shares the crop progress for the week ending October 12th. He begins with Idaho.
Mertz: “The warm weather in Idaho has been benefiting the last week in getting the crop harvest done for the end of the season. So, the harvesting of potatoes, sugar beets and corn progressed well during that last week in addition to the planting of the winter wheat that will be harvesting next year.”
He adds that most crops are ahead of average in Idaho. He continues with Oregon’s crop progress.
Mertz: “In Oregon, the winter wheat planting is being completed. Corn for silage is nearly finished. Hazelnut/Filbert producers were racing to get most of the final sweeping of the nuts that had fallen before the rains came.”
Mertz says that most of Oregon remains dry. He concludes by reporting on Washington.
Mertz: “Winter winter planting was nearly complete and much of it is emerging and progress is much higher than the five year average so the dry weather that we’ve had in the recent weeks has been helping out the farmers in their field work. The last of the cuttings of alfalfa was being baled and plenty of pumpkins out in the fields getting ready for the Halloween festivities.”
