Promoting the Equine Industry

Promoting the Equine Industry. I’m Greg Martin with Colorado Ag Today.

The equine industry gets a major boost each year as students graduate from the CSU equine program. Dr. Jerry Black, Director, Equine Reproduction Lab at Colorado State says that if you are interested in learning about horses, you should take a look at their program.

BLACK: The undergraduate program itself has approximately 400 undergraduate students in it and we’re fairly unique in the fact that we have a degree specific in equine science. This is not an animal science degree with a certificate, etc. but a full bachelor of science degree in equine science. Of course many of our students go on into graduate school, etc. but others go directly into the equine industry.

Black discusses the Legends of Ranching Sale, a part of the program.

BLACK: The sale is rather unique in the fact that it provides out student actually two opportunities learn skills that are very, very relevant to the industry itself. The young horses that are consigned by ranches all over the west are used as a training opportunity and experience for about 30 to 35 students each year

It’s these horses that the students use to learn appropriate groundwork and prepare for saddling and training.

BLACK: These students will prepare these horses for the Legends of Ranching sale and the sale will be managed by the sales management class that is students as well. Very, very high end sale. I would dare say one of the premiere sales in the region.

And that’s Colorado Ag Today. I’m Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
