Help For The Family Farm Part 2

Help For The Family Farm Part 2. I'm Greg Martin with Colorado Ag Today.

It's easy to forget that running a family farm is a business in addition to a lifestyle. Jeff Tranel, Agricultural & Business Management Economist with Colorado State Extension says that includes the passing of family members.

TRANEL: What we have found when we first developed this course and started conducting workshops we went in with the expectations that this would be difficult. But what we realized through our experiences is that families are really wanting to have more conversation about end of life, transitioning the farm and the family on to the next generation. It may be grandma is still cooking Thanksgiving dinner, she's getting tired of that. Who's going to take on that responsibility for the family

Tranel says this whole process has really surprised them.

TRANEL: We're really found just the opposite. It is therapeutic to the participants in such a workshop to say yes, others have this problem. Here are different perspectives. Grandpa thinks one way, granddaughter thinks another way, how do we blend those? It's been really quite positive.

There is a lot of information available online for family needing help through their website at Colorado State University Extension.

And that's Colorado Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
