Agriculture and the special session; Stockland Livestock Report

Washington Ag Today December 14, 2010 The state spending reductions the Washington Legislature approved during its one-day special session this past weekend include 389-thousand dollars less for the Washington State Department of Agriculture. The WSDA will achieve administrative savings through vacant position management, suspend grants for knotweed eradication and control, and suspend weights and measures inspections.

Funding for the State Conservation Commission was cut 496-thousand dollars. As a result allocations to Conservation Districts will be reduced by eight percent.

Washington State University is seeing its state funding reduced another 7.4 million dollars or 4.2 percent. The legislature had already trimmed the university’s budget six percent earlier this year and more recently Governor Gregoire ordered another a six percent spending reduction.

Now the report from Stockland Livestock.

“This is Jack McQuinness with Stockland Livestock here in Davenport. We had 900 cattle on our market here today. Cows and bulls stronger again. Top of 61, 62 cents for the better quality, higher yielding cows. Bulls topped in the low 70s with the feeder cattle steady. Had pretty good test on calves. Some of these light steer calves going up to five $1.31, $1.32. Four weights up into the high 30s, low 40s. Ten to 12 back on the heifer calves. Big sale next week. Stocks cows and feeder cattle. We will have a real nice selection of bred cows and bred heifers. Talk more about that on our report later in the week. Stockland Livestock in Davenport. Thanks for listening.

Thanks Jack.
