ACRE payments could average $67 an acre in Washington for 09

Washington Ag Today April 29, 2010. Wheat growers in Washington who stayed with the traditional Direct and Counter Cyclical farm program for their 2009 crop got a direct payment but that was all. Farms that elected to participate in the new Average Crop Revenue Election Program, or ACRE, had to give up some of that direct payment, but they will be getting an indemnity payment and come out ahead. Tom Platt, Washington State University Extension Educator in Davenport, has been running the numbers.

Platt: “It has turned out that the payment is going to be a little higher because the market dropped more than people were anticipating. So I‘m expecting on average across the state that people that signed up for ACRE are going to earn about $67 for each planted acre. And that is over and above the cost they paid for this ACRE insurance. Next year probably about half that much if prices and yields hold constant. If they don‘t it is a little too early to calculate.”

Farmers who may want to switch to ACRE in 2010 have until May 31st to do so. To assist them in re-evaluating participation in the ACRE Program, Platt is holding two workshops, one in Ritzville on Monday, May 10th at the Washington Association of Wheat Growers building and a second in Davenport on Tuesday, May 18th, at Lincoln County Public Works.
The workshops run from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Workshop registration is required by the Friday prior to the workshops and costs $20 for the first person from a farm plus $5 for each additional person. Mail a check payable to Lincoln County to WSU Extension, Box 399, Davenport WA 99122.
