Hort census; Pasco Ag Show

Washington Ag Today December 31, 2009 Just after the new year the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service will be sending out surveys for horticultural crops. Joe Reilly of NASS says the survey is done every ten years to determine the status of the nursery and floriculture industries.

Reilly: “Horticulture and all the nursery related products are one of the big sections of agriculture. Totally they are bigger than vegetable production the country and very close to total fruit production in the country. So they are a big sector. This has been an ongoing program. We have done this every ten years dating back, I can‘t remember when it first started, but we did it in 1988, 98, so on. So this is a continuation of the series and it gives the horticulture nursery industry a detailed look at their producers.”

NASS will publish the results of the survey in December of 2010.

The annual report for Washington State University’s cereal variety testing program is complete. The results and supporting information for the 2009 variety trials are in one PDF file that can be found on the website

http://variety.wsu.edu under the 2009 data section. Stephen Guy, WSU Extension Agronomist who heads up the testing program, says in some cases data tables and narrative have been upgraded from the original drafts that were sent a harvest.

The annual Pasco Ag Show is next week, January 5th and 6th at the TRAC in Pasco. This year’s event is titled “Real Ag.” Tickets are $5. For more information go to pascorealag.com
