Governor Otter on the Galloway Dam

Reading from a memo to the Idaho Water Resource Board dated May 15, 2009: “Galloway Dam Feasibility Study House Joint Memorial No.8 passed by the 2008 Idaho Legislature identified the study of the Galloway Dam on the Weiser River in encouraging the IWRB to evaluate additional storage projects in the state of Idaho.

Agua Caliente, LLC, a geothermal development company, expressed interest in working with the Board to evaluate the feasibility of the Galloway Dam, and in particular, to identify whether a geothermal power facility and water storage project can co-exist in the basin.

"What are the plans for the future? More dams, more reservoirs? We are studying several locations in the Galloway Dam which is the Weiser site as one of those. We could back up 900,000 acre/feet of water in that one reservoir where the entire Boise River system is a million. Not only that, David, it’d be cool water. So the 425,000 acre/feet that we have to dedicate to fish flows, would be cooler and we wouldn’t have the thermal problems we’ve got with the water warming up in the Hell’s Canyon complex and those at the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake Rivers. There’s a lot of great thing that could happen if we could go forward with the Galloway Dam."
