Regular contributor to the show and chief editor of Horns and Hooks magazine, Rex Petersen, gives us some tips on sturgeon fishing: “ I went sturgeon fishing on the Columbia River yesterday and we hooked 20 fish that were 6 to 10 foot and we landed 17 in one day between 5 of us. Tell me your approach to fishing those. They are on the bottom I know, so they’re in a deep hole, so what rigs are you using. We are using whole shad that we catch in the river, there is a lot of shad running in the river right now, and you can catch them with a net. They have basically dead, killed by the damn weather just so many in the river that they are floating. So we use a whole shad with 80 pound test and of course braided leaders, slip weights, and you just find a nice trough where the bait can float down through and then just anchor up. Make sure that you have a detachable buoy because as soon as you hook an 8 foot sturgeon you are going to have to on attach from your buoy and follow it and fight it because there is no way you can catch it if you are hooked up to an anchor. You have to follow the fish. There is no way you will land an 8 to 10 foot fish if you are anchored. To help you you have to use the boat tire the fish out or the fish will just spool you. There’s no way you can control them.”
