Rancher’s Feeding Kids Program....
Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.
I’m Greg Martin with the Open Range AgriBeef Minute. Many school lunch programs focus on fruits and vegetables but according to Anna Marie Chamberlain, Oregon State University Livestock and Range Management Extension Agent the Ranchers Feeding Kids program helps get beef meals to students.
CHAMBERLAIN: This is a program that began in 2009. It started with 75 kids in the one district. There’s two parts to it. One, we get beef donated to the school districts from local ranchers, typically retired or culled animals that are healthy and perfectly fine but something that would probably be leaving the ranch for one reason or another.
The donated cattle are then processed and schools can decide how they wish the beef to be packaged.
CHAMBERLAIN: Most of it is being ground into ground beef but some of it they’re keeping the roast on. The school gets the beef and then they are able to feed that in their school through their lunch program to all their students. To date we’ve had 27 head donated and 22 of those have been processed. They have a live value of $14,853.
That translates to 13,600lbs of hanging weight.
CHAMBERLAIN: So it saves the school districts money and in a lot of districts we’re seeing that they are making some menu changes, too. Less processed products and they’re able to feed 100% beef. It’s healthy; it’s nutritional; they know where it came from; they feel good about the product.
I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.
Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m Susan Allen.
