In what was viewed as a preemptive strike against animal rights activists Ohio voters overwhelming approved Issue 2, the ballot measure to amend the states constitution and create a livestock care standards board made up of ag industry professionals. How does that impact us out West? I’m Susan Allen , stay tuned to find out. Issue 2 was resoundingly passed by Ohio voters last week with it’s goal to create a livestock Care Standards Board ;thirteen members comprised of farmers, ranchers, veterinarians and ag industry leaders. The amendment will provide an effective vehicle for establishing and enforcing guidelines for the care and well-being of livestock and poultry. Issue 2 matters because it stands as a model of a preemptive move against anti- agriculture groups like the Humane Society of the US and PETA. Farmers and ranchers were able to assure voters they care about the quality of life of their animals and that their industry peers would be the most effective to set standards, regulate even punish unacceptable animal husbandry than those outside the industry. So yes groups intent on destroying production agriculture which ultimately limits consumers food choices had the rug pulled out from under them when a Issue 2 , a pro-animal welfare and pro-food safety bill was successfully brought to the voters without sensationalism and fear tactics by surprise... the farming and ranching community.
