WSU Potato Field Day next week

WSU Potato Field Day next week

Farm and Ranch June 18, 2010 It is just under a week now to Washington State University’s Potato Field Day.

Pavek: “That’s on Thursday, June 24th and it is located at the WSU Othello Research Unit. We have this field day each year and our goal is to educate the grower with the latest research and technologies by discussing applied research that we do and conduct in the Columbia Basin.”

That’s Mark Pavek, part of WSU’s potato research group. He says a large part of the field day is looking at commercial seedlots brought into Washington.

Pavek: “A large portion of the seedlots that growers do plant here are grown outside the state. To kind of keep a quality check on these outside sources we evaluate each seedlot that is brought to us for virus and disease and other growth compromising factors such as herbicide carryover. The results will be shown at the field day and then growers can go out and look at their individual seedlots. So a good time for the commercial grower to meet up with the seed dealer and they can discuss the results.”

Among the other sessions at the field day will be a Chemigation Remote Monitoring and Irrigation workshop.

The WSU Potato Field Thursday June 24th begins at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and rolls with the commercial seedlot trial viewing starting at nine a.m. at the Othello Research Unit.
