Getting Set for HORT

Getting Set for Hort. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. The 2010 Washington State Hort Expo is still a month and a half away but now is a great time to start making your plans now to attend. Work has been underway for some time now on the schedule which will include Matthew Whiting, Associate Professor at WSU. WHITING: My main responsibility is going to be coordinating the cherry session. That's one that we've added the last couple of years. We've got speakers from around the region. This year coming in, Oregon State University, speakers from the Tree Fruit Research Commission, from Washington State University. We've got growers from around the region talking on a panel as well. The Annual Hort Expo trades off every other year between Wenatchee and Yakima with this year's event at the Yakima Convention Center on December 6, 7 and 8 and of course there are always a lot of things on the schedule. WHITING: We'll be talking about various issues including looking at gibberellic acid programs. There's some really neat research being done at Oregon State looking at timings and rates of gibberellic acid to try and refine those elements to look at fruit quality. Also looking at a couple of key issues including rain induced cherry cracking. And as always the Hort Expo is more than just a bunch of seminars and displays. WHITING: It's the opportunity to get together as an industry, sort of bring the minds together; learn what's going on in research and outreach and also a lot can be learned in the informal discussions in the hallways. I find that that a real value to this meeting because the people that I want to talk to will be there. For more information on the 2010 Hort Expo visit www.wahort.org.
