Pruning & Grafting Workshop

Pruning & Grafting Workshop

Pruning & Grafting Workshop. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. Anyone who works in and around an orchard can benefit from an upcoming workshop that looks at pruning and grafting according to Andrew Corbin, Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator for WSU Extension Snohomish County. CORBIN: Summer fruit tree pruning and bud grafting are two separate management practices that most people don't realize can be done in summer and they're actually pretty effective. So they're two separate workshops but people can attend both because they're back to back. Corbin says that these two seminars cover activities usually reserved for fall & winter times. CORBIN: Most people think of pruning as winter management but for summer you can improve tree health and open the canopy for circulation and help fruit to ripen. Grafting is also often thought of as an off season activity but it's a good task for the summer. Sign up online at Snohomish.wsu.edu and as an extra to the grafting seminar you will receive a grafting knife. CORBIN: Gary Moulton is the instructor for the workshops and he's a really well known fruit tree manager and he'll be talking about principals of pruning, the physiology and the changes that go through and summer pruning. Couple that with the goals of the individuals that want to do this kind of thing. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
