Producers are always asked to join this organization or that group because they will be able to help with issues that would harm your livelihood or way of life. Well, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association just paid dividends to its members and the rest of animal agriculture with actions the group recently spearheaded. The NCBA sent a letter to Senator Saxby Chambliss outlining opposition to the appointment of Cass Sunstein as administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs or OIRA. According to an article by Leesa Zalesky in Western Ag Reporter, Senator Chambliss, a ranking member of the Senate Ag Committee has placed a hold on Sunstein's nomination. The OIRA administrator is responsible for reviewing, approving, rejecting or changing all regulations sent out by the Obama presidency. That's scary enough in its own right, but the NCBA is most concerned with Sunstein's "extreme animal rights advocacy." He has co-edited and contributed to the book, Animal Rights: Current Debates and New Directions. His philosophy is that animals "should be permitted to bring suit, with human beings as their representatives." A man with that thinking would not be a good man to sit in judgment of any regulation concerning animal agriculture. Thank you NCBA! Let's hope the hold on his appointment becomes a stop.
